Stoxnet

Plymouth

Pennycross Stadium was built in 1928 for greyhound racing, becoming the third dog track in Plymouth. Speedway was introduced in 1932, and the stadium was the home venue of the Gladiators team until 1937. Speedway returned in 1947 and lasted until 1954.

The first stock car meeting was held in July 1954, with regular meetings through the summer. More meetings in 1955, but with reducing levels of interest, just one meeting was held in 1956, with the last ever F1 meeting a year later.

Stock cars returned to the track in the form of F2s in the 1960s.

By the late 1960s, the stadium had become run down. Speedway was again curtailed in 1969, and the stadium closed in 1972 and was demolished.

The Cherry Tree Gardens housing estate on Pennycross Close now stands on the site of the stadium.
