Stoxnet

Sunday 12th September 1954

Dublin

Thrills, and plenty of spills, featured in Ireland's third stock car race meeting, held at Shelbourne Park, Dublin, on Sunday, before a big attendance. Rain which fell before the start of the first race sent spectators rushing for shelter, but did not dampen the enthusiasm of the drivers, whose vehicles bumped and pushed each other around the track in a flurry of dust, exhaust smoke, and escaping steam. Wally Kells of Collom, who the the only Louth driver competing, who unplaced in two of the events, sustaining some hard knocks in the 24 car final. The rules of stock car racing are elastic enough to permit drivers to crash into each other's vehicles, if necessary. Frequent smashes are the result, but the drivers are seldom injured. Next Sunday the promoters will stage the first Irish International stock car meeting, when teams from Ireland and England will compete. Freddie Williams leads the Irish team.
