Known as Tiger Hart.

Born in Balham, London in 1908. Age 16, he ran away to Australia after a furious row with his father over the purchase of his first motorbike. Began racing on the dirt tracks around Brisbane in 1927 and three years later was persuaded to return to England to become a professional speedway rider. His first meeting was at Portsmouth in 1930, and he was billed in the programme as "Tiger" Hart. He had no knowledge of the origin of the nickname, but it stuck with him throughout his racing career. Retired from speedway after breaking his left leg three times in 18 months.
