Not to be confused with the National Points Championship, the National Series has been contested each year since 2002 and is based on the points scored over the 33 meetings throughout the year which are designated "National Series rounds". Each driver's 28 best scores are used to calculate their season total. In practice the championship has been won by the National Points champion, but in 2006 the two titles went to different drivers for the first time.
Each driver has a “Joker” for each surface (tarmac and shale). A driver playing his ‘Joker’ at a particular meeting is eligible for double points at that meeting. Jokers have traditionally used towards the end of the season but this year the three main contenders (Andy Smith, Stu Smith Jnr and Frankie Wainman Jnr) played one of their Jokers at their respective World Championship Semi-final meetings: the semi final races are raced as Heats in the meeting, but score points as Finals.
The 'National Series Finale' meeting, the last round, scores double points for all drivers - a bonus which has previously had no effect on the winner but which in 2006 allowed Andy Smith to take the title in the last race.
Andy failed to defend his title in 2007, despite being just 2 points behind Frankie Wainman Jnr going into the last race of the season. Frankie took the title for the fifth time, ensuring that he remains the only driver to have ever successfully defended the title.
Since its creation in 2002 the winner of the National Series has been awarded the 'silver roof' to wear on his car during the season following his win. The silver roof was previously awarded to the National Points champion.
